The St. Petersburg Interdisciplinary Program in Optics is a five week program intended for students majoring in a wide variety of disciplines: (Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Ecology, Environmental Science and Engineering) who are interested in the applications and uses of optical devices in their respective fields. All instruction (and texts) will be in English. However, participants might find that a rudimentary knowledge of Russian is helpful, thus, if required, some Russian language tutoring will be provided at small additional cost. Beyond the course work of the program, participants will be invited to join in various cultural programs offered by students and faculty at the host university.

St. Petersburg is Russia's most European city. It was created by Peter the Great (1672-1725) to be his "Window on the West" at the only point where traditional Russian territory meets a seaway to Northern Europe. St. Petersburg has retained much of its 18th century grandeur and orderliness with the result that it is often described as one of Europe's most beautiful cities. The Saint-Petersburg State Institute of Fine Mechanics and Optics (Technical University) [IFMO] is one of the oldest post-secondary institutions of its kind in Russia. Begun in 1900 as the "Crown Prince Nicholas Trade School," it was originally created to train masters in fine mechanics and optics.
