(successful completion of this program awards six credits)

Join us on an unforgettable journey--a three-week literary tour across England that will entice you back into the Victorian Era. As a participant in this program, you will:

  • experience the great monuments of London and explore that vast city much more happily and safely than Oliver Twist ever did in Charles Dickens' novel,
  • let ancient Oxford, crowned with its legendary colleges, draw you into its architectural majesty and eclectic student student culture, you will actually be able to go "punting" on the river where Lewis Carroll dreamt up the absurd Alice stories,
  • inhabit the serene village of Dorchester and strike up a game of "skittles" with local pub-patrons, many of whom can tell you stories about Thomas Hardy,
  • hike the awe-inspiring Yorkshire Moors, where Haworth is nestled, rediscovering the gothic beauty and natural majesty of the setting for Wuthering Heights.

You will have the chance to bring Victorian novels and contemporary British culture to life in conversation and reading, but you will also be able to travel where the classroom cannot take you. You will be able to visit the actual places that inform the pages of these great novels with their sense of place, and you'll meet people who will enrich and broaden your perspective on the world outside your home.

You will visit famous historical sites like Big Ben and the Parliament building, Westminster Abbey, St. Paul's Cathedral, and the Tower of London. This study tour will also guide you through the great experiences of twenty-first century London, including the recently reconstructed Globe Theater, London's open-air markets, and the dazzling lights and sights of Piccadilly Circus, where you will enjoy a night of world-class "legitimate" theater. As you explore England's great colleges of art - to be found in the British Museum, the Victoria and Albert, the Tate Modern, the Ashmolean - you will be enriched by the array of world cultures (and cuisines!) that have made London and Oxford their homes.

You will have the benefit of on-site guidance and support of an experienced Program Director throughout the program. You will receive:

  • comprehensive orientations before your departure and throughout the program,
  • prearranged travel arrangements to, from and across England,
  • safe and secure housing in hotels and hostels throughout the program,

  • mentoring throughout these new cultural experiences,

    This program will:

  • Integrate you into British society,
  • Make you a better student,
  • Expand your outlook on the world,
  • Build your self-esteem and self-confidence.
