Leiden University is the oldest university in The Netherlands, founded in 1575 by Prince William of Orange. Since its inception, the university has maintained a prestigious place in academia, with four of its faculty members receiving Nobel Prizes in the 20th Century. Students will find an impressive array of academic resources, including the library with a circulating volume of 3 million, an extensive collection of historic maps and manuscripts and an exotic botanical garden for research.

The university buildings are interspersed throughout the town itself, which makes students' residences within walking and cycling distance of the academic buildings and city shopping areas.

While the principle language of academic instruction is Dutch, the majority of students and faculty speak English and the study abroad program is constantly increasing courses offered in English, with approximately 100 or more courses in English per semester.
