This program will not be offered during the Summer 2009
Features:
This course provides students with a healthy dose of field experiences that offer a chance to actually "do geology" in the field. Some of these exercises will be completed at classic locations that were instrumental in the development of the science of geology. The group will visit classic locales including Siccar Point, Hutton's section and the Old Red Sandstone.
Course Requirements:
Textbook: G.Y Craig, GEOLOGY OF SCOTLAND 3rd edition, 1991. The Geological Society of London. Available through the AAPG bookstore at 1-800-364-2274
Prerequisites: Introductory Physical Geology with Lab (Historical Geology recommended). A student in good standing at a U.S. or Canadian College or university.
Grading: Grades will be based on three major factors of equal weight:
1. Pre-trip assignment: You will be asked to prepare a summary paper and presentation on the geology of one of the field trip sites to be visited. The summary paper should be descriptive and concise, a maximum of 4 pages plus references (beyond the textbook). The presentation will be an oral presentation to the group with questions the evening before the relevant field trip.
2. Participation in field trips and group discussions during our time in Scotland is expected.
3. Final Paper: Your will write a final research paper on a specific aspect of Scottish geology of your choosing. Your topic should be selected by the end of the field excursion, and the paper is due (TBA).
