Curriculum:
Participants in the Brockport Edna Manley College summer program will earn six (6) credits for completion of the program, including field research and paper.
Classes
A. Technique: All technique classes offer experience at beginner, intermediate and senior levels in Modern, Traditional and Reggae based styles. Students are introduced to the various styles over a period of two (2) 1-1 ½ hour sessions daily. During weeks two and three more specialization is introduced. During the final week, tutors will divide the time into skills development and choreography in preparation for the final production. All participants are encouraged to take part in this production.
B. Dance & Culture: This course offers an introduction to Caribbean Folk and Jamaican Traditional dance forms. The emphasis is placed on Theory & Practicum related to traditional forms. These practical classes offer energetic and invigorating movement skills - an approach to technique which has evolved out of our Caribbean ancestral experience. This is further explored in-depth by studying the historical origins, beliefs and practices which have influenced the present day forms.
C. Repertoire: These 1 ½ hour sessions provide an opportunity for experienced dancers to learn Dance Works created for the National Dance Theatre Company - co-sponsors of this Workshop, and will be taught by members of the Company.
