Credits:
Participants in the Brockport program at Leiden University will normally earn 15-18 credits per semester. However, participants need to be aware that not every course carries the same credit weight, because the amount of credits awarded per class varies between, and even within, departments. In the Netherlands' university system, a credit point is awarded for one week's work (40 hours) that includes lectures, reading, written work and examinations (significant independent research is the norm). Depending on the workload, classes are assigned a credit value ranging from 2 to 8 credit points. Students who enroll in the intensive Dutch language course will receive 3 credits if the course is successfully completed as part of their academic program. The Office of International Education at Brockport can assist you in constructing a course schedule that will constitute a full-time schedule in the US.
Curriculum:
Participants in the Brockport/Leiden University (The Netherlands) Program will select (prior to departure) three courses available to study abroad students at Leiden University. All instruction in the Brockport/Leiden University (The Netherlands) Program is by Leiden University (The Netherlands) faculty.
Participants in the Brockport/Leiden University (The Netherlands) Program are examined in the same manner (and to the same standard) as their Dutch counterparts and classmates. The majority of courses in which they will enroll are examined formally at the end of the semester and in order to be awarded credit, participants must take--and pass--the examination at the end of the study period in question.
The English language courses offered at Leiden University are traditionally offered in 6 "streams:" a group of classes chosen from multiple Faculties and departments that are thematically packaged (see courses offered below). Several departments also have other course options in English, and students who are interested in studies outside a particular stream can compose their own schedule from these electives.
Prior to their departure, participants in the Brockport program at Leiden University will select 3-4 courses per semester of study. All course instruction is by Leiden University faculty, and participant will be examined in the same manner (and to the same standard) as their Dutch classmates.
Prior to the start of each semester there is also an option to enroll in a 3-week intensive Dutch language course. There is an additional fee of approximately $325, plus a supplemental housing charge for this option. While English is widely spoken in the Netherlands, students will find that a basic knowledge of the Dutch language will make more opportunities available to them during their time in Leiden.
