Is This the Right Program for You?

http://www.port.ac.uk/

The University of Portsmouth is truly an international university, in that approximately 3,600 of its 22,000 students are from countries other than England; so students seeking a truly international, multicultural academic and living experience should consider the programs available.

The University is in the heart of the ancient seafaring city of Portsmouth and much of the students' time will be spent within a 10 minute walk from the harbour or waterfront. A complimentary and frequent bus service is provided to students throughout the day between the two main campuses, Guildhall and Milton (Portsmouth Business School). The history of the University dates back to 1870. Since awarding its first degree the University has maintained its commitment to promoting and maintaining excellence in teaching and research across its five faculties. Faculty and students are very proud of the University's extensive research program, its international reputation, and its excellent record of graduate employment (97%). The last few years have seen a rapid growth. Large investments have been made to provide state-of-the-art teaching and living accommodations in the city centre. Historical buildings on campus have been attractively refurbished.

Portsmouth is on England's southern coastline and is located on an island between Bournemouth and Brighton. London is just 80 minutes away by train. Its history and heritage are tied closely to the sea and today the most common site from its ancient walls are the car and passenger ferries that make numerous crossing daily to continental Europe, namely to France and Spain. A medium sized city, Portsmouth offers students many attractions such as sports facilities, swimming pools, museums, cinemas, theatres, libraries, and a wide variety of social venues. The city center is only five minutes away from the majority of the university buildings, so shopping, entertainment, and bus and train stations are very convenient. The second busiest ferry port city in Britain, Portsmouth's economy is flourishing, with major companies in high technology, engineering, and financial services. Such companies as IBM, Pall Europe, British Aerospace, Ford, and Zurich Financial Services are established in Portsmouth and the surrounding area. Old Portsmouth, a popular tourist destination, offers tourists and students alike numerous restaurants, shops, and opportunities for exploring historical sites. Being a coastal and island city, Portsmouth offers a safe and enjoyable location to live, work, and study. Students find the air clean and the people friendly. Portsmouth is one of England's sunniest cities due to its sheltered location. Rainfall is lower than the national average and snow is very unusual. The city is also affordable for students, having a nightlife that has grown around the student population. Many of the local clubs and sports centers offer student discounts. In summary, Portsmouth is a student-friendly city, one that welcomes students and endeavors to make the students' stay enjoyable.

    A student visitor:

  • 1. Must not stay for more than 6 months
  • 2. Must intend to leave the UK at the end of the student visit
  • 3. Must have an unconditional offer on a course of study
  • 4. Must not work or engage in a work placement or internships, whether paid or unpaid
  • 5. Must be able to pay for all course fees and living expenses with recourse to public funds
  • 6. Must be at least 18 years old
  • 7. Are not eligible to extend their stay at the end of their visit

If coming as a student visitor, and are not a visa-national (Americans are not visa nationals), you do not need to apply for entry clearance or a visa prior to their arrival in the UK. You will, however, need to bring with you proof of funds, your unconditional offer letter, and proof of accommodation in the UK. Students who wish to undertake an internship or a work placement, whether paid or unpaid, are not eligible to come as a student visitor and must apply for the student visa.

If a student intends to stay for longer than 6 months, would like to work part-time, intends to take an internship or work placement (paid or unpaid) or would like the option of extending their stay at the end of their course they must apply for a student visa. It is recommended that all students apply for a student visa simply because it affords them greater opportunities and flexibility.
