The Seventh Darwin International Guitar Festival:
The Darwin International Guitar Festival attracts renowned musicians from around the world and therefore offers students the opportunity to learn first hand from some of the world's greatest artists. In 2007 the festival featured artists from USA, Australia, Uruguay, Italy, Brazil, Italy and Spain. The location of the Charles Darwin University gives students the opportunity to explore a unique Australian environment at a time of year when it is at its most spectacular.
Curriculum:
*Participation in workshops as an auditor/participant;
*A lecture series based around key areas of classical guitar repertoire, history, construction and pedagogy;
Concert series;
Nineteenth Century performance practice summer course.
Credits:
Participants will earn three (3) credits for this program.
An Opportunity to Explore Australia's Unique Natural Resources & Livelihoods:
This program is located in a remote Aboriginal community in Central Arnhem Land (Maningrida) in the Northern Territory. By taking part in this week long intensive program, you will be provided with the opportunity to participate in lectures and workshops conducted by internationally recognized academics, as well as gaining hands-on experience with a number of field trips.
Curriculum:
This program is run by the School for Environment Research and will be delivered by Professor Tony Cunningham and Dr. Lindsay Hutley. Professor Cunningham is an internationally recognized expert in ethnobotany and has extensive experience in natural resources, local livelihoods and conservation. Dr. Lindsay Hutley is an expert in ecology and has extensive experience working with aboriginal people and their use of wildlife for subsistence and commerce.
The unit will cover five topics:
- General introduction: the social context of enterprises in remote communities' natural resource-based products;
- Ecologically sustainable harvest of natural resources;
- Economic issues and natural resource-based enterprises;
- Certification and marketing of products based on natural resources;
- Communicating research results to audiences.
Assessment will be undertaken by completing three items:
- Online discussion based on guided readings (before residential week);
- Reflective journal (after residential week);
- Major essay (after residential week).

Discover Indigenous Culture in the Northern Territory, Australia:
Indigenous Australians, particularly in the Northern Territory, find themselves in a situation post 1976 of having regained responsibility for the management of their land estates. This program explores the history of land and resource management in the north of Australia, the current situation and Indigenous people's aspirations for the future.
Curriculum:
The program includes one week of classes in Darwin exploring issues augmented by guest lecturers and local experts. This is followed by a one week field trip in the rural and remote Top End of the Northern Territory. This is an amazing opportunity to visit iconic destinations within the Northern Territory including the World Heritage listed Kakadu National Park, Nitmiluk National Park and/or Arnhemland.

Participants will earn three (3) credits for this program.
Outback Jackaroo Jillaroo Experience:
You can experience the outback adventure of your life with this five-day package, developing cattle industry skills in a true outback setting. The groups are small - ten people or less - so you get a quality, valued experience. It is located at Charles Darwin University's Katherine Rural Campus, near the busy rural township of Katherine, located 300 kilometers south of Northern Territory's capital city, Darwin.
Curriculum:
The program presenters are qualified, experienced professionals. Students will be taught basic cattle station skills and by the end of it, you will be rewarded by the experience of daily life as a budding jackaroo or jillaroo. Developing horse riding, saddling and riding techniques, you will be cattle mustering in no time.
